OCX to register using Regsvr I first downloaded it from the Microsoft site. Upon running the download, I was given the message that the file was successfully updated.

If not give that a try. And have you tried to register it on a second PC? Do all of your machines have the same problem? If that doesn't work, then we'll have to dig deeper. Download and run Process Monitor. Play with it a little to see how it works. It is my favorite troubleshooting tool. I did capture the attempt to register and stopped it straight after, although I'm not sure if that capture is stored in a file or what the deal is as I got download mscomctl.ocx for windows 8 free pop ups asking to save anything anywhere. Nonetheless I'll see what I can find and stick it up here.
Thanks again. That's good, it's exactly what I was looking but. I also did not see any obvious download mscomctl.ocx for windows 8 free. So I traced regsvr32 on my laptop. You can then verify that the entries for the OCX are there. So I wonder if something isn't broken in your system. I would say that would be a good thing for you to do. You may have different versions than I do. I also went back to the trace and looked for winsxs. My trace has a lot more calls than your system. Check your application and system event logs to see if there are any Winsxs errors. Make sure all of the Windows Updates are installed too. However I am definitely in the right directory. After that didn't work I replaced it. I also notice it was not in system32 so I pasted it there but that hasn't solved the issue. There is no reason for Powershell to be involved with this process. OCX It should look like the image below. Ran the commands in order, but still getting the same error. Click on the magnifying glass icon Look for "access denied" in the Result column.
